Best Time to Fly Fish Belize (Bonefish, Permit and Tarpon)

Belize is one of the best places in the world to target bonefish, permit, and tarpon on the fly. The flats around San Pedro and Ambergris Caye offer opportunities for all three species throughout the year. While some months may produce larger fish or more consistent conditions, anglers always have a chance if they can cast well and present the fly properly.

Bonefish

Bonefish are available year round in Belize and are often the most consistent species for anglers visiting the flats. Large schools of bonefish move through the shallow water surrounding San Pedro, giving anglers plenty of opportunities to practice their casting and sight fishing skills.

Permit

Permit are the most challenging and rewarding species on the flats. They are available year round, and skilled anglers always have a chance at landing one. The best success usually comes when anglers can place the fly accurately in front of feeding fish.

Tarpon

Tarpon fishing becomes especially strong during the summer months when larger migratory fish move through the area. However, resident tarpon can still be found at other times of the year and are always a possibility when fishing the flats and nearby channels.

The Belize Grand Slam

One of the biggest goals for fly anglers visiting Belize is completing a Grand Slam by catching bonefish, permit, and tarpon in the same day. While this is never guaranteed, the flats around San Pedro provide anglers with one of the best chances in the world to achieve it.

The truth is there is no single perfect month to fish Belize. If you can cast and put the fly in front of the fish, there is always a chance.
